Wilderness
2010 Australia as a tourist destination is synonymous with the idea of unspoiled nature and wilderness and it has a large number of National Parks, which are easily accessible to the public. While today the vast majority of Australians lives in one of the urban centres, these parks are a convenient way to enjoy and experience Australia’s shrinking natural environment. Nevertheless, the wilderness in within them has become more and more controlled. Easy access is provided through hiking tracks and humans carefully manage the natural balance. What used to be untamed and often dangerous terrain has now in parts become a place of recreation. At first glance the images in this series show unspoiled nature. It is only at a second glance that the viewer notices the signs and didactic panels within the tableaux, revealing the depicted scenery as choreographed landscape rather than untamed wilderness. |
